The City Council denies the PSOE: Estepona does not irrigate or flush with drinking water

The City Council of Estepona denounces the irresponsibility of the PSOE that, knowing that it is a lie, again reiterates the false information that Estepona is irrigated with drinking water. The City Council has already explained in plenary session to the socialist spokeswoman that the irrigation of green areas and the washing of the city is done with non-drinking water from four wells that the city has, near the sea. All this water arrives through an irrigation network different from the drinking water, in several areas, and by tanker trucks at other points.

On the other hand, the City Council of Estepona is complying with the issued notice limiting irrigation and other activities for the preservation of water resources.

Also, the City Council wants to regret the lack of sensitivity of the socialists with the problem of drought, to question the construction of a desalination plant in the municipality, as it will be a short-term solution and will ensure the supply to the population and the economic stability of the city.

No water fit for human consumption is destined by the City Council for irrigation of the city, any claim against this is false and unfounded.

Between 15,000 and 20,000 cubic meters of drinking water are consumed per day for the population of Estepona, throughout the year, except in summer, when consumption doubles to 35,000 cubic meters per day.

The consumption of non-potable water by the Town Hall, from non-potable well water, for street cleaning and irrigation is as follows:

For street sweeping and cleaning, using tanker trucks with non-potable water from wells, 36 cubic meters per day are consumed.

For irrigation of young trees, planters, flower towers and other ornamental elements, using tanker trucks with non-potable water from wells, 26 cubic meters per day are consumed.

For irrigation by means of an alternative network with non-potable water from wells, in the avenues Litoral, El Carmen, Paseo Marítimo, Avenida de España and Avenida Juan Carlos I, 13 cubic meters per day are consumed.

The rest of the city’s trees and lawns are not being watered.

All this adds up to 75 cubic meters per day of non-potable water, which represents 0.2% of the water consumed by the population during the summer season, and 0.4% of domestic water consumption during the rest of the year.

Thus, even if this water could be incorporated into the human consumption network, with the difficulties that this would imply, it would only represent an insignificant amount within the volume of drinking water for domestic use that is needed to supply the population of Estepona.

It should not be forgotten that this non-potable water for cleaning and irrigation serves to preserve the arboreal and bush heritage of the city, which belongs to everyone; as well as to keep the city minimally clean and ornamented for the maintenance of all the businesses that live from the service sector.
