Estepona City Council reports that the ‘great poet of the Carnival of Cadiz’, Antonio Martínez Ares, will arrive at the Felipe VI Auditorium next Friday, May 10, at 22.00 hours, with one of his best works, the comparsa ‘La oveja negra’, winner of first prize in its modality in the Official Competition of Carnival Groups, COAC, 2024.

Antonio Martínez Ares is the last great active author of the Cadiz carnivals and this year celebrates the 40th anniversary of ‘Requiebro’, his first comparsa as author and component. ‘La oveja negra’ places him in the select group of authors who have won three consecutive awards (Paco Alba, Pedro Romero and Antonio Martín). It defends with authority the leadership of its creator, whose literary and musical quality is shown overwhelming in the last editions of the contest, as evidenced also by the first prize obtained in the last edition with ‘La ciudad invisible’, a repertoire with which he closed the trilogy of comparsas that was born with ‘La chusma selecta’ (2020) and followed with ‘Los sumisos’ (2022).

With 27 groupings in his career, after a 12-year break between ‘Calle de la mar’ and ‘Los cobardes’, the ‘Niño de Santa María’ has reached the final 22 times and obtained the highest award of the contest on ten occasions: ‘Les Miserables’ (1993), ‘La ventolera’ (1994), ‘La trinchera’ (1996), ‘Los piratas’ (1998), ‘La niña de mis ojos’ (2001), ‘Los cobardes’ (2016), ‘Los carnívales’ (2019), ‘Los sumisos’ (2022), ‘La ciudad invisible’ (2023), and ‘La oveja negra’ (2024).
