Work begins on one of Estepona’s main commercial arteries, which will take two months less than planned

The execution of the works to integrate Terraza Street into the pedestrian axis of the historic center will be reduced from 8 to 6 months.

The contract with the company awarded also includes a reduction in the cost of the intervention of more than 314,000 euros.

Estepona City Council reports that work has begun on the comprehensive remodeling project of the central street Terraza, an intervention with which the transformation of one of the most commercial streets of the city is pursued to make it more accessible, safe and sustainable and integrate it into the pedestrian axis of the historic center.

This is an action framed in the call for aid for the strengthening of commercial activity in tourist areas financed by the EU’s Next Generation Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.

The works have been awarded to the company Ingeniería, Obras y Tecnología Europea, S.L., which, among its proposed improvements, has included the reduction of the execution time of the works by two months, so that finally the work will be executed in six months instead of the eight months that had been initially foreseen in the bidding specifications. In this way, the inconvenience that the work may cause to neighbors and shopkeepers in the area will be reduced.

Another of the improvements proposed by the successful bidder is a reduction in the base bid price of 314,504 euros, so that the final contract price is 2,085,496 million euros.

The project aims to recover the concept of the street, designing an efficient model for its route and operation, while revitalizing its use as the main artery of the historic center. To this end, we have opted for an intervention that gives pedestrian priority by executing a single platform that will provide a sense of spaciousness to the entire urban area, generating a uniform environment that will enhance the activity of the various services and facilities it includes.

The pedestrian is thus emphasized, improving environmental conditions and creating an environment that guarantees universal accessibility in urban mobility. In addition, the new project will renew the current pavement by incorporating safer materials for pedestrians and will unify the different levels of the road to reduce the risk of falling or tripping, creating continuity along its route.

Terraza street connects Andalucía avenue with España avenue, and the area of action contemplated runs along this road from Los Reales avenue towards the sea, crossing the historic heart of the city. Specifically, it will intervene in three phases on an area of about 8,668.45 square meters, whose approximate dimensions are 600 meters in length and between 10 and 20 meters in its cross-sectional area.

The deputy mayor of the area of Development, Infrastructure and Tourism (FIT), Ana Velasco, reported that the first of the sections on which action is being taken is the one between Avenida España and Suárez Figueroa. Subsequently, the works will be transferred to the section from Suarez Figueroa to the Plaza Antonia Guerrero, the third phase linking this square with the Orchidarium area.

Among the main novelties of this project is the enhancement of such an emblematic space as the Plaza Virgen del Rocío, which will become a more open and accessible space. In addition, it will increase the number of seating areas along this street so that passers-by can rest and enjoy this public space.

The planned work also includes the renovation of the supply and sanitation infrastructure, the installation of new street lighting along the entire street, the installation of a structure of awnings to create shade, the presence of flush-fitting tree wells on the surface, reconditioning the existing tree species, street furniture, and the installation of new planters along the street at ground level for greater visual permeability and a sense of the whole. Surface parking lots are also eliminated, while respecting some loading and unloading zones. It should also be noted that the new road design will also allow access for emergency and security vehicles.
