The City Council will create a new crossing in the Guadalmansa riverbed to connect the Las Joyas and Norte de Cancelada urbanizations.

The Consistory will soon invite tenders for the construction of a speed bump on the existing rural road, which will be closed to traffic during periods of heavy rainfall.

The Estepona Town Hall has drawn up the project for the work that will be put out to tender shortly and which aims to improve the functionality, accessibility and safety conditions of the existing rural road between the Las Joyas and Norte de Cancelada housing developments. For this purpose, a ford or speed bump crossing will be built to cross the road over the Guadalmansa River.

With the preparation of this crossing, the access to the plots and urbanizations located on both sides of the Guadalmansa River, in the surroundings of the existing rural road, is made possible, saving the riverbed during most of the year, since it is a stream that only carries water sporadically during periods of intense and lasting rainfall.

The ford will be built over an existing crossing in the riverbed with earthen paving, which is often in a deteriorated state of conservation due to the erosion processes caused by successive floods in the riverbed. The weakness of the current pavement and heavy rains have been the cause of the deterioration of the pavement. In order to improve the durability and stability of the road, scheduled conditioning and paving works will be carried out.

Specifically, 134 meters long and 6 meters wide will be paved with lightly reinforced concrete slabs on a compacted granular subbase. The work includes the earthworks necessary for the new roadbed on the bed of the riverbed and the opening of side platforms at mid-slope on the slopes of both banks, to connect the crossing with the existing roads on either side.

The work will be completed with the corresponding road signs, road markings and vertical signs, according to the plans, for greater safety of user traffic. The vertical signage will define when this ford can be crossed or not, with special attention to rainy periods, when it will be closed to traffic.

The planned works will be carried out on the riverbed, affecting the public hydraulic domain and its protection zones (right of way and riverbed police), and will therefore require the mandatory authorization of the Hydraulic Administration of the Andalusian Mediterranean Basin.

It is important to point out that the programmed action will in no case diminish the drainage capacity of the current public channel. The work adapts the gradient of the new paved road to the morphology of the existing natural channel, without altering the current hydraulic cross-section or introducing obstacles to the flow of the stream.

On the other hand, it should be noted that the Estepona City Council is studying the possibility of planning a viaduct in this area in the future, similar to the one that was built over the Taraje stream.
