The works to double the exhibition space of the Municipal Archaeological Museum are in their final stages.

The renovation, which is 80 percent complete, includes a new large exhibition hall on the upper floor, as well as the remodeling of the central patio, carpentry, flooring and stairs, and the installation of an elevator.

The Estepona City Council reports that the comprehensive reform of the facilities of the Municipal Archaeological Museum is in its final stretch. Through this action has doubled the exhibition space, with the construction of a new large room that has been enabled on the top floor and will allow the public to display dozens of archaeological pieces that have remained stored until now due to lack of space.

The work, which has an investment of 97,999 euros (VAT included), is at 80 percent of completion and includes other interventions that will involve a comprehensive remodeling of the facilities. Thus, the works that have already been undertaken have been the construction of a new large room located on the upper floor, where it has recovered an old ceiling beams typical of local buildings of the eighteenth century, which has been applied a specific treatment to keep it in optimal conditions. An elevator has also been installed and the existing toilets on the first floor have been refurbished, as well as the flooring of the central courtyard, which is at the same level and where the fountain has been removed.

In addition, the cistern has been left with its visible access opening, and has been covered with structural glass; and the stair treads have been renewed, replacing the broken pieces and replacing the formation of the steps.

On the other hand, the last actions that remain to be undertaken are the polishing of the floor, the installation of new lighting, painting and some other review.

The councilman attached to the area of Heritage, Daniel Garcia, has indicated that the work will continue enabling the museum furniture and proceeding to the distribution of showcases and archaeological pieces, many of which are entailing a major rehabilitation process.

The archaeological work that has been carried out in recent years, and have brought to light dozens of pieces that speak of the origins of the city of Estepona, made it necessary to provide the museum with more rooms, so that these important remains can be displayed to the public, as explained Garcia. Most of these pieces date from the prehistoric, Roman and Islamic periods, and only a small amount has been exhibited so far in a temporary exhibition. The aim of this new municipal project is that these funds have their definitive space within the museum.

The building of the Municipal Archaeological Museum of Estepona, a building built in the eighteenth century consists of a first floor and two floors and consists of a central courtyard where there is a cistern belonging to a tower of the Muslim period. On both floors there is an arcaded gallery around the central courtyard that distributes the different rooms.
