The exhibition can be visited from January 30 to February 12.
The Estepona Town Hall informs that Room 2 of Casa de Las Tejerinas, located in the Plaza de las Flores, will host from next Thursday, January 30, an exhibition of paintings by the Cadiz artist Jorge Rivas. The exhibition, entitled ‘Verso Libre’, consists of 14 works of medium and large format made with the technique oil on canvas, paper and board.
The style of this self-taught artist, meticulous work in detail and constant search to define a personal style to express his inner world, is that of narrative figuration, developed in compositions with an expressionist touch and distorted when representing dreams or imagined moments and more “realistic” in portraits or cityscapes. His intention is to make the viewer reflect and let his imagination fly.
This exhibition can be visited until February 12 from Tuesday to Friday, from 09.00 to 20.00 hours; and Saturdays, from 09.00 to 14.00 and from 16.00 to 20.00 hours, with free access.
Jorge Rivas was born in El Puerto de Santa María in 1964 and currently lives in Alcalá de los Gazules. “For as long as I can remember I remember drawing at my parents’ house, I was a shy child and I imagine that was my way of expressing myself”.
At the age of 22 he had his first job as a draftsman in the archaeological museum of his city. A year earlier, his brother, two other classmates and he formed a graphic design collective. In 1986 they had their first exhibition of surrealist style drawings made with a black pen, and in 1990, their first exhibition of paintings.
In 1991 they were selected for the Cadiz Biennial of Contemporary Art ‘Aduana’, where he sold his first painting. The president of the jury was Antonio Lopez and personally chose his work. In 92 they exhibited at the Carbonería, in Seville, and in 93, after exhibiting at the Silos Gallery in Tarifa and establishing conversations with Guillermo Pérez Villalba and Fe Rodríguez, he went to Madrid with the intention of making himself known.
During the 12 years he remained in the capital he made some more exhibitions and entered fully into the world of work as a designer. After his return to Cadiz in 2005, he held a solo exhibition in El Puerto in 2006, and did not exhibit again until 2023. His last exhibition was at the Museum of Vejer de la Frontera in July 2024.
