The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, said that this action recovers for the enjoyment of all this watchtower, dating from the second half of the sixteenth century, and complements the coastal corridor project.
The Estepona City Council reports that the Velerín tower and its surroundings have been enhanced with an action that has just been completed and has involved the creation of a green area of 5,000 square meters with numerous Mediterranean species.
From now on, this jewel of historical heritage, dating from the second half of the sixteenth century, can be contemplated more easily by citizens, since until now there was no easy and direct access to the watchtower. In addition, scenic lighting has been installed in the monument so that it can also be enjoyed at night and street furniture to enjoy the green area and its sea views.
The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, said that this action, in addition to highlighting the rich heritage of the municipality, complements the leisure offer offered by the coastal corridor that runs along the historic enclave.
The Velerín tower is one of the seven watchtowers that are scattered along the coast of Estepona. They are the testimony of the defense system that lasted until the nineteenth century to fight against pirate landings.
The alderman has highlighted the work being done from the City Council to recover the historical heritage of the city with actions such as the opening to the public of the Castillo de San Luis, which has been converted as an exhibition space in the old town.
