The Estepona Town Hall and the residential developer AEDAS Homes have announced the 3rd Estepona International Mural Competition. This initiative, which aims to promote the development of urban art in the city and expand the famous route of outdoor vertical artistic creations in the municipality, aims to cover ten more building facades with mural paintings by artists from around the world.
The contest is open to artists of any nationality and over 18 years of age. The artists will be free to propose a theme, argument or plastic composition. The work will not be limited in the type of artistic representation. Each artist must submit one proposal per artist, and they must be original, not awarded in similar contests and unpublished, being understood as unpublished those that have not been previously performed in any other public place.
In this edition, the jury will select a first prize of 10,000 euros and a second prize of 5,000 euros. In addition, eight finalists will be chosen, who will receive 1,500 euros.
In the words of the mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, this contest, an initiative of the Consistory that reaches its third edition with the collaboration of the national reference housing developer AEDAS Homes, “contributes to consolidate and expand the Route of Artistic Murals of Estepona, a cultural initiative that has become an important tourist attraction and one of the hallmarks of the municipality”.
AEDAS Homes is a leading residential developer in Spain that has promoted more than 300 projects with more than 18,000 homes in the most dynamic markets in Spain. In a very short time the company has become an icon of innovation, sustainability, industrialization, rigor and professionalism in the real estate sector.
Estepona has become in the last decade a true open-air museum that offers a new way to enjoy urban art through the route of the murals. A total of 64 artistic murals decorate the facades of buildings in different neighborhoods and areas, bringing them to life and turning them into an added attraction. One of them, entitled ‘Dia de Pesca’, is one of the tallest vertical murals in Spain. It occupies almost 1,000 square meters of surface and is made on the facade of six blocks of apartments in the Isabel Simón neighborhood.
“I am convinced that, once again, this contest will be a first-class artistic event because we will have the opportunity to observe how creators of different styles and schools elaborate these large-format works in the different neighborhoods,” said García Urbano, who stressed the tourist and social impact that this initiative has on the city.
The mayor thanked AEDAS Homes for its commitment to the Estepona International Mural Competition, created by the City Council in 2017. “The support of AEDAS Homes allows us to develop this third edition of a unique contest that contributes to bring art closer to the neighbors, at the same time that different enclaves of our municipal district are put in value.”
The collaboration with AEDAS Homes for the organization of this contest is framed within the scope of this company’s program with the arts, through which it carries out actions that support the dissemination of art and culture as part of its ambitious environmental objectives. “With the new ‘ReViste’ competition we want to turn Estepona into a more sustainable and attractive city and boost its value and culture,” explains José María G. Romojaro, director of Architecture at AEDAS Homes and head of the ‘ConLasArtes by AEDAS Homes’ project.
Those interested in participating in the competition can submit their proposals until September 10. They can do so in person at the Historical Heritage Delegation of the Estepona Town Hall, located in Casa Tejerinas, Plaza de las Flores s/n, Estepona (Málaga), from Monday to Friday, from 9.00 to 14.00 hours; by post at the same address; or by email to the following address: phc@estepona.es. The projects must meet the requirements set forth in the attached conditions.
The period of execution of the works will be from October 7 to 17. The jury’s decision will be announced on October 18. The evaluation criteria are: originality and quality of the project, integration in the urban space, and technical feasibility.
