Five altars will participate this Saturday 2nd in the ‘Cruces de Mayo Estepona’26’ contest organized by the City Council.

The Brotherhoods will set up their ‘May Crosses’ in different parts of the city center, and the jury will evaluate them from 12:00 noon, based on criteria such as the beauty of the Cross, ornamentation, appropriateness to tradition, and craftsmanship of the details used.

The best crosses will be awarded with € 1,000 for the first, € 750 for the second, € 500 for the third and € 300 for each of the remaining.

Estepona City Council reports that next Saturday May 2 will be held a new edition of the ‘Cruces de Mayo’ contest, the traditional popular contest in which the beauty of these altars will be rewarded.

With this contest, the Consistory aims to encourage the decoration of streets and squares with crosses and floral decorations and to maintain the popular roots for this tradition. This year a total of five altars made by Brotherhoods will participate.

The members of the jury will visit the altars from 12:00 noon, without prior notice. Criteria such as the beauty of the Cross, the ornamentation of the place where it is installed, the appropriateness to the tradition, craftsmanship and details used in the set of the Cross will be assessed. Once visited all the crosses submitted to the contest, the jury will issue the ruling, after deliberation of its members.

The mayor of Fiestas, Macarena Diánez, has indicated that in this new edition has been convened a single category for the best cross in streets or squares. The prizes are as follows: 1st prize: 1,000 €; 2nd prize: 750 €; 3rd prize: 500 €; and 300 € for each of the remaining.

The different ‘Cruces’ will have bar service so that citizens can enjoy food and drinks while enjoying this tradition.

The altars will be located in the following spaces:

– Plaza Begines: Grupo Joven Remedios – Real Hermandad Santa María de los Remedios.

– Salvador Dalí Street: Hermandad de Nazarenos del Stmo. Cristo del Amor (Brotherhood of Nazarenes of Stmo. Cristo del Amor)

– Virgen del Rocío Square: Illustrious and Venerable Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus Cautivo.

– Calle Veracruz: Real y Antigua Hdad. del Stmo. Cristo de la Vera+Cruz
