The Estepona City Council is launching a special surveillance and monitoring campaign to prevent wildfires

Starting June 20, the Local Police will step up surveillance at the entrances to the mountains and in Los Pedregales Park to ensure compliance with regulations prohibiting burning and the use of fire during the high-fire-risk season.

The Estepona City Council reports that it has launched a special forest fire surveillance and prevention campaign that will remain in effect until October 15, coinciding with the high-risk period for forest fires established by regional regulations.

These regulations prohibit, between June 1 and October 15, controlled burns and the use of fire in forested areas and their surrounding zones, as well as any activities that could pose a fire risk. The goal of these restrictions is to minimize the likelihood of fires during a particularly sensitive period due to high temperatures, low humidity, and the accumulation of dry vegetation.

To ensure compliance with these preventive measures and strengthen the protection of the municipality’s natural environment, the Local Police will launch a specific enforcement and awareness campaign on June 20, targeting individuals entering forested areas within the municipal boundaries.

To this end, various checkpoints will be set up daily at the entrances to the mountains, primarily along the Estepona-Jubrique highway, where officers will check the identification of individuals and vehicles, as well as inform visitors about the restrictions and prohibitions in effect during this period of high fire risk.

The checkpoints will operate during morning and afternoon shifts and will remain active until fire risk conditions allow for their deactivation. The checkpoints will be determined by the Service Headquarters and will be located primarily on the Estepona-Jubrique highway, near kilometer marker 4.5, as well as at other locations deemed strategic for the surveillance and protection of the natural environment.

In addition, officers will prepare daily reports on the actions taken, documenting the individuals identified and, where applicable, the license plate numbers of vehicles entering these forested areas.

At the same time, the Local Police will step up surveillance on weekends in Los Pedregales Park and its surrounding areas to prevent the misuse of the barbecue facilities in this natural area. Although these facilities remain sealed off for safety reasons, there have been instances where some users have removed the seals and started fires—a practice that is expressly prohibited and poses a significant risk to the conservation of the environment and public safety.

The City Council reminds residents that prevention is the most effective tool for avoiding wildfires and calls on citizens to act responsibly by complying with current restrictions and helping to protect the municipality’s valuable natural heritage.
