The City Council is upgrading the lighting in six parks and will save 27,000 euros annually thanks to LED technology

The project will replace 350 streetlights, reduce installed power by approximately 65%, and save more than 95,000 kilowatt-hours per year—the equivalent of the electricity consumption of 27 homes

The Estepona City Council is carrying out a comprehensive renovation of the street lighting in six of the city’s parks, a project that will improve the efficiency of these facilities and generate an estimated annual savings of 27,000 euros for the municipal budget.

The project involves replacing 350 high-pressure sodium vapor lights with new, state-of-the-art LED fixtures in La Constitución Park, Huerta Nueva Park, Human Rights Park, Children’s Park, Seghers Park, and Carmen Thyssen Park. In the latter park, more than a hundred decorative lighting fixtures have also been installed to enhance its appeal and improve the visitor experience.

The project represents an investment of 186,823 euros and will modernize facilities that, in some cases, were more than 30 years old. Thanks to this renovation, the installed power will drop from 35 kilowatts to 12.25 kilowatts, representing a reduction of 22.75 kilowatts and a decrease of approximately 65 percent in the energy consumption associated with lighting these public spaces.

The Deputy Mayor for Services and External Control, Blas Ruzafa, emphasized that this initiative reflects the city’s commitment to the continuous improvement of public spaces and to increasingly efficient resource management. “We are renovating facilities that, in some cases, had become obsolete after decades of service. With this initiative, we are improving the quality of lighting, increasing safety and user comfort, and, at the same time, significantly reducing energy consumption and maintenance costs,” he noted.

Likewise, the municipal official emphasized that “the new LED technology will save around 27,000 euros per year, making this an investment that will yield a direct return for the city council and continue to generate economic and environmental benefits throughout its useful life.”

Based on an average annual operating time of 4,200 hours, the energy savings resulting from this initiative are estimated at 95,550 kilowatt-hours per year. This figure is equivalent to the average annual electricity consumption of about 27 homes, highlighting the significant positive impact of the measure from both an economic and environmental standpoint.

In addition to energy savings, the new installation will significantly reduce operating and maintenance costs thanks to the longer lifespan of LED technology, fewer breakdowns and replacements, and more efficient lighting management through control systems that will adapt lighting levels to the actual usage needs of each park.

The project also incorporates criteria for environmental sustainability, public health, and the protection of urban biodiversity. The new luminaires will use a warm color temperature of 3,000 Kelvin, particularly suitable for nighttime environments, reducing unnecessary blue light emissions and promoting rest for residents.

Furthermore, the system will allow for the scheduling of reductions in luminous flux during off-peak hours to lower energy consumption, while the design of the optics will minimize light spill onto building facades and green spaces. Similarly, special attention has been paid to glare control through the appropriate selection of photometric specifications and mounting heights, improving visual safety and comfort for pedestrians and users.

The expected service life of the new luminaires is approximately ten years, during which time the installation will maintain optimal operating conditions. During that time, the estimated cumulative savings will reach 270,000 euros, which will not only allow for the full recovery of the investment made but also generate a net profit of over 83,000 euros.

With this initiative, the Estepona City Council continues to advance the implementation of more efficient, sustainable, and environmentally friendly infrastructure, improving the quality of public spaces and reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency.
