Juan Antonio Valor, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Madrid (UCM), presents the book *What Will Become of Us: How AI Is Transforming Humanity* at La Casa de Las Tejerinas

The event will take place this Wednesday, July 22, at 7:00 p.m., with free admission until capacity is reached, and will be hosted by Miguel Palma Molina, who holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of Complutense Madrid (UCM).

The Estepona City Council announces that the Alfonso Gil Alfonso Hall at the Casa de Las Tejerinas will host the book presentation of “What Will Become of Us? How AI Is Transforming Humanity’ by Juan Antonio Valor, professor of philosophy at the Complutense University of Madrid.

The event, with free admission until capacity is reached, will be hosted by Miguel Palma Molina, a Philosophy graduate (UCM).

Synopsis: The artificial intelligence project that Alan Turing proposed in 1950 has advanced exactly as he imagined. More and more processes are being reduced to algorithms executed by machines, which increase in power as their processing speed and storage capacity grow. Through artificial intelligence and the expansion of the internet, we have achieved a level of automation that has completely transformed our world, our way of living and thinking, our personal, social, political, and economic relationships, and even our conception of nature and ourselves. All of this gives rise to new possibilities that were unimaginable just two or three generations ago. But we also face new challenges, which now take on a global dimension: our social and political structure is changing, as is the way we exercise democracy and our relationship with work; new global superpowers are emerging, along with new economic hubs linked to technological development and new inequalities…

Ultimately, all these issues point to the same problem: how to define what it means to be human in a world where the old solutions provided by modernity and the Enlightenment no longer hold true, simply because the development of artificial intelligence is blurring the lines between humans and machines. Therefore, in this essay, I invite the reader to reflect on the complex moment we are experiencing, in which the old world is disappearing and the new one has yet to fully emerge. Now that we know the future is not what it used to be, it is urgent that we ask ourselves what will become of us.

Juan Antonio Valor Yébenes is a full professor in the Faculty of Philosophy at the Complutense University of Madrid, where he served as dean from 2018 to 2022. He completed his undergraduate and doctoral studies at that same university and at Trier University (Germany).

His fields of research are the Philosophy of Nature, the Philosophy of Science, and the History of Science. He has participated in numerous research projects, serving as principal investigator on several of them, and has published more than eighty works, including books, book chapters, and scholarly articles. His most recent works, lectures, and courses have addressed issues related to artificial intelligence.

Among other works, he is the author of the book *Methodology of Scientific Research* (Biblioteca Nueva, 2000), as well as the author and co-editor of the book *Science and Method in the 19th and 20th Centuries* (Plaza y Valdés, 2023). His latest book is *What Will Become of Us?
