Artist Toby Govan is exhibiting his new sculptures at the Casa de las Tejerinas

The opening of the art exhibition will take place on Thursday, July 30, at 8:30 p.m., with flamenco singer Rocío Bazán in attendance, and it will be open to the public through September 30, with free admission.

The Estepona City Council announces that the Casa de Las Tejerinas, located in the Plaza de las Flores, will host a new exhibition by Estepona-based sculptor Toby Govan from July 30 through September 30.

The opening of the art exhibition will take place next Thursday, July 30, at 8:30 p.m., and will feature a performance by local flamenco singer Rocío Bazán. The exhibition will be open to the public every day in August and September, Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., and Sundays from 8:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., with free admission. 

The new sculpture exhibition by Estepona-based artist Toby Govan, who is of Scottish origin, is titled “Apogeo: The Emergence of Being,” and will feature nearly thirty large-scale works and another twenty smaller pieces, which will rotate each month.

As in past exhibitions, the sculptor invites the public to “feel the stones” and experience the power and energy they hold. After all, the essence of this artist’s work is that it is meant to be touched, whether it’s a three-metric-ton piece or a 10-centimeter figure “that fits in the palm of your hand.”

Toby Govan (Edinburgh, Scotland, 1967) is a sculptor who has lived in Andalusia since childhood. Trained at the School of Arts and Crafts in Granada and in photography in Madrid, he found his true education in the studio of his father, the sculptor Douglas Govan, who taught him the technique of direct carving and the ability to “read the stone.” From his mother, the watercolorist Ann Govan, he inherited a sensitivity for composition and harmony.

Specializing in direct carving of marble, serpentine, and other natural stones—such as peridotite, quartzite, and lapis lazuli—he creates works featuring organic and abstract forms that explore universal emotions such as embrace, protection, unity, and nature. His sculptures are designed to be both viewed and touched, inviting the viewer to a complete sensory experience.

His work is part of private collections and public spaces in Spain, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and the United States, notably including several monumental sculptures permanently installed in the city of Estepona.

He shares his life with the poet Lorena Jiménez Martín, with whom he maintains a deep connection between poetry and sculpture—disciplines that engage in dialogue through various creative projects.

Previously, he has held solo exhibitions at the Casa de las Tejerinas: *Las Milhojas de la Vida*, 2025; *Eternas Sensaciones*, 2024; *Naturaleza Viva*, 2024; and *Tocando Sensaciones Preciosas*, 2023.

As part of group exhibitions, he has participated in various editions of *Caprichos*, organized by the Málaga Provincial Council, and in *Hitos del Rodenal* in Guadalajara (a permanent group exhibition in tribute to the victims of the tragic 2005 forest fire in the Alto Tajo region).

He is also the creator of six monumental sculptures integrated into the urban landscape of Estepona, which form part of the city’s artistic heritage: *En tus brazos* (In Your Arms), in Plaza Paco de Lucía; *La Elefanta Requetebién* (The Very Cool Elephant), in Plaza Rocío Bazán; *El Ascenso* (The Ascent), at the Municipal Athletics Stadium; *El Abrazo a la Cultura* (Embrace of Culture), at the Padre Manuel Cultural Center; *Dragón al Sol* (Dragon in the Sun), in El Calvario Park; and *Floreciendo* (Blooming), in the gardens of the Orquidario Botanical Park.
