Estepona’s mayor regrets that the central government opposes the project of a train for the Costa del Sol

The councilor considers it “surprising” that the Ministry of Transportation does not consider this infrastructure for one of the areas that contributes most to the GDP of our country.

The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, has regretted that the Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, has shown today his opposition to promote and implement a rail project that allows the union of Malaga capital with the Costa del Sol and the Campo de Gibraltar.

The alderman considers that it is “surprising” that the central government shows reluctance to implement this infrastructure so necessary in one of the most thriving areas of our country. “It is incomprehensible that, despite all the contribution that makes the Costa del Sol to national GDP, that economic growth is not accompanied by a provision of modern and competitive facilities such as a railway axis that vertebre this territory that receives millions of tourists each year, “said García Urbano.

He also regretted that the Minister of Transport obviated in his statements to half of the Costa del Sol, which shows a lack of knowledge of the reality of this region that is a tourist reference at the international level.

On the other hand, considers that the railway project that should raise the central government would have to consider the connectivity from Malaga to Algeciras. In his opinion, you can not give up this route, which would prevent areas of the region of the Costa del Sol would be cut off, as is currently happening with municipalities such as Estepona.

On the other hand, he maintains that the construction of a suburban train would be the most interesting technical solution for the coastal train to become a reality. In this sense, he makes the following reflection: if in cities like Madrid metro lines of 30 or 40 kilometers are executed every so often and continuously, why not gather enough determination to develop a similar project on the Costa del Sol.

The councilman says that for this initiative to become a reality, the central government should exploit the public-private route as happens when toll roads are projected, so it reiterates the importance of the Executive to be the one who takes seriously our area and bet on a model of sustainable and efficient public transport for the Costa del Sol.

Finally, he added that the future railway line could have a dual use so that the train service could fulfill both local and medium distance functions.
