Estepona has increased by 225% the collection of household goods in the last decade.

The Estepona City Council also collects 11.3% more solid urban waste in the last ten years, exceeding 40,000 tons in 2023.

The staff of the street cleaning and solid waste collection service has been increased by 17 people since 2019.

The Estepona City Council reports that the street collection of household goods and bulky objects has been increased by 225 percent in the last decade. According to data provided by the concessionaire of the service (PreZero), in 2023 they came to collect 3,600 tons of household goods while in 2012 the figure was 1,600 tons.

In addition to the increase in this type of collections, the concessionaire reports that the removal of solid urban waste has also increased by 11.4 percent in the last ten years. Thus, if in 2012 the figure was 35,480 tons, during 2023 it reached 40,024 tons.

With these data that highlight the increase in population that Estepona has experienced in recent years, as well as the creation of new public spaces that require this service, the concessionaire has been making a series of investments in material means and human resources to respond to the new needs.

Since 2012, more than 4.2 million euros have been allocated to the acquisition of vehicles and materials to improve this service. Part of these resources have been allocated to the collection of household goods and bulky objects. The company expanded it with two brigade vehicles and a crane truck, which pay special attention to the outskirts, since this is the area of the city where the largest increases in the deposit of this type of waste have been collected.

In addition, specific vehicles have been acquired for street cleaning in areas such as the old town of Estepona, which, due to the narrow layout of many of its streets, requires a fleet adapted to these spaces.

On the other hand, in 2023 a new investment of 475,000 euros was made to acquire new machinery (2 brigade trucks, a hydro-cleaning vehicle, a crane truck and a sidewalk stripper). Although this fleet is used throughout the municipality, the company acquired it to cover new pedestrian areas that are being created, such as Avenida España and residential areas that are in the expansion phase.

The resources to improve the street cleaning and solid urban waste collection service have also included an increase in the workforce. In the last decade it has been increased with 17 permanent discontinuous employees, who perform their duties during the period in which there is a greater influx of tourists (10 months).

In turn, the City Council of Estepona has been increasing in the last decade the annual fee for the maintenance of this service. If in 2012 it was 6.3 million euros, in 2023 it was 8.2 million euros.

The concessionaire recalls that in the last decade it has also been making a significant annual effort in the renewal of rear-loading containers, since the municipality had almost two thousand iron containers that have been replaced to eliminate their presence. This change has not only been a matter of image, but to facilitate the collection work of municipal workers.

The City Council of Estepona wants to thank the cooperation of citizens in the cleaning of public roads and requests that they continue to help as far as possible so that the municipality is in the best conditions. Finally, it encourages citizens to be aware of the importance of proper separation of waste deposited on public roads, as this has a positive impact on our environment, in addition to reducing economic costs for the treatment of the same.
