The City Council will enhance the traffic management system with new smart cameras to improve urban mobility

The installation of more than a hundred new devices makes it possible to use new technologies to optimize traffic flow and respond immediately in the event of traffic jams or accidents
The Estepona City Council will strengthen traffic control in the city by expanding the existing network of smart cameras with the aim of improving urban mobility. To this end, it will open the bidding process for the contract to supply and install 144 new devices that will be integrated into Estepona’s traffic visualization, monitoring, and control system.
In 2023, the City Council launched a smart camera system for urban traffic control that was a pioneer in the province due to the type of technology used. In the first phase, 110 devices were installed throughout the city, which were later supplemented by an additional 73 traffic control cameras in various residential areas through partnership agreements.
This system has provided the City Council of Estepona and its residents with numerous benefits in terms of traffic control, which is why the City Council is expanding the system to achieve greater coverage in various areas of the municipality, explains Deputy Mayor for Safety, Ana Velasco.
Now, this system is set to take a qualitative and quantitative leap forward by incorporating new surveillance devices with greater capacity and improved features, which will allow for the application of new technologies to enhance traffic flow and enable immediate action in the event of traffic jams or accidents. The system is managed from the Control Center at the Local Police Headquarters, although it is also available to other law enforcement agencies that require it.
The smart system allows for real-time interconnection, as well as the viewing, recording, and storage of all types of data, images, and videos on a central server located at one of the City Hall facilities, which is accessed from the Estepona Local Police Headquarters.
In addition, provisions have been made so that the entire traffic video surveillance network can be used to monitor and reduce traffic speed and density; therefore, this project includes the installation of a speed control point. The aim is to modify driver behavior, thereby improving both general mobility and road safety in particular, as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The installation of all components of the traffic monitoring, display, and control system will be carried out in accordance with the relevant security measures set forth in the ENS (National Security Scheme), thereby ensuring the secure transmission of information over the network and complying with current legislation regarding security and the protection of personal data.
In addition to supply and installation, the contract will include the maintenance of all existing devices. The base bid budget for the contract is 970,410.78 euros, including VAT.
