The Mayor of Estepona will receive on Europe Day the medal of the International Association of Civil Servants of the European Union, AIACE, for his commitment to pro-European values.

The event will take place next Thursday, May 9, at 11:30 a.m., in the Rotunda of the European Union. At 7:00 p.m. there will be a presentation on the new challenges facing Europe at the Mirador del Carmen Cultural Center, with free admission.

The City Council of Estepona reports that next Thursday, May 9, Europe Day, the mayor, José María García Urbano, will receive the medal of the International Association of Civil Servants of the European Union (AIACE) in recognition “for his commitment to European values”. The delivery will take place in the framework of the events organized to celebrate the anniversary of the historic ‘Schuman Declaration’, signed on May 9, 1950, in which he set out his idea of a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between European nations inconceivable. That date is considered the founding act of European construction.

The official ceremony will take place at 11.30 am in the Rotunda of the EU with the intervention of students from various schools, José Isaías Rodríguez García-Caro, Councillor European Movement of Andalusia; Joaquín Díaz Pardo, president of AIACE-Spain; and the mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano.

To commemorate this date, the City Council organizes a series of activities that will give citizens the opportunity to discover and experience the European Union at the hands of officials of the European Commission, the European Parliament and the European Movement of Andalusia, as well as the ‘The Innovation in Politics Institute of Vienna’.

First, a series of lectures on the European Union have been scheduled in several schools and secondary schools in the city, on 8 and 9 May, coordinated by Benedicata Miguélez Herreras. Officials and people who hold positions of responsibility in EU bodies will explain to students why Europe Day is commemorated, what agreements were reached with the ‘Schuman Declaration’, or the importance of the European Union in the work for peace.

The following schools will participate: IES Monterroso, Mediterráneo, Mar de Alborán and Tomás Hormigo, the schools Juan XXIII and San José, and the primary schools Simón Fernández and Ramón Lago. The speakers will be Maruja Gutiérrez Díaz, D.G. Education and Culture, European Commission, board member AIACE Spain; Antonio Espino, D.G. Financial and Economic Affairs, European Commission, board member AIACE Spain; Nina Glumac, D.G. Education and Culture, European Commission; David Leal, representative of the Innovation in Politics Institute in Spain; Henrietta Sinkovits, D. G. The event will feature speeches by Alejandra Cas Granje, DG Economics and Finance European Commission; José Isaías Rodríguez García-Caro, European Movement Councillor for Andalusia; and Francisco Domínguez Díaz, Professor of Law at the University of Cadiz.
