The master glassmaker of Estepona Jonatan Diaz exhibits his work ‘Looks, from destruction to art’ in the Casa de Las Tejerinas

The glass art exhibition will remain on display from November 21 to December 4. It can be visited with free access

Estepona City Council reports that the Room 2 of the Casa de Las Tejerinas will host, from November 21, the exhibition of art glass ‘Looks, from destruction to art’, the master glassmaker of the town Jonatan Diaz.

The exhibition consists of a total of 16 unique pieces made by hand, and can be visited until December 4 from Tuesday to Friday, from 09:00 to 20:00 hours, and Saturdays, from 09:00 to 14:00 and 16:00 to 20:00 hours, with free access.

Jonatan Díaz was born in Estepona. From an early age he was attracted by the rays of light passing through the majestic stained glass windows of cathedrals or other buildings, which led him to become interested in glass at an early age. With only 14 years learned to cut glass and solder lead with a hand soldering iron, heated by fire. At the age of 18 he opened his own workshop, Vitromar, where he has been working for 27 years.

Today he continues to perfect his technique with a careful and constant study of traditional techniques, new materials and tools, which has led him to have a consolidated position among glass artists in our country and the recognition of the Junta de Andalucía as Master Craftsman.

As a result of this research, he has developed a line of sculptural kaleidoscopes called Reflektium, for which he has been awarded the prize for the Singular Work of Craftsmanship.

As everything related to glass and art claims his attention, in recent months he has concentrated on the production of a series of pieces made with hammered safety glass, creating stunning glass portraits with a hammer as the only tool. Despite technological advances, his work remains manual, retaining a great respect for traditional techniques while in his designs brings an innovative twist. Some of his works are spread throughout Spain, including the Canary Islands, Ceuta and the Balearic Islands. Outside Spain he has worked in France, Holland, Germany, Poland, Russia, Slovenia and the United States, among others.
