Estepona City Council collaborates in a new edition of the media literacy project for seniors ‘Press without Age’.

The workshop will be held from April 8 to 12 at the Active Participation Center, from 17:00 to 19:00 hours, and aims to reduce the possible digital divide and promote a critical interpretation of information.

The City Council of Estepona, in collaboration with the Press Association of Malaga (APM), offers the elderly population of the municipality to participate in the development of a new edition of its media literacy project for seniors ‘Press without age’.

This initiative, in which also collaborate the Foundation “la Caixa” and the Junta de Andalucía, has among its objectives to bring media literacy to the elderly, in order to minimize the possible digital divide among the older population and contribute, through training, to encourage active participation and the use of technologies.

The workshop will be held on April 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12, from 17:00 to 19:00 hours, at the Center for Active Participation of the Elderly, located at Calle Zurbarán, 7, where the elderly may attend accompanied by a family member or caregiver who will encourage them to participate and help them at home to review the knowledge acquired.

In these classes, participants will learn in a practical way how news are made and how to verify the information, and will be provided with basic digital tools, useful in everyday life.

The Deputy Mayor of the Sociocultural Area, Paula Herrera, highlights the value of this initiative of the APM for this group, very vulnerable to the changes introduced by new technologies. Thus, she considers that these courses also contribute to enhance the autonomy of these people, since all educational activity is an intellectual exercise, vital for the maintenance of good overall health.
