City Hall commemorates International Women’s Day with talks, guided tours and workshops during the month of March

The official ceremony will be held on Friday, March 7 with the presentation of the ‘March 8 Awards’, which this year will recognize the historic activist María Espinosa de los Monteros, posthumously, and the philosophy teacher of IES Mar de Alborán Cristina García Aragón.

Estepona City Council joins one more year to the commemoration of International Women’s Day with a program of events that will take place during the month of March. The official ceremony will take place this coming Friday, March 7, at 12.30 pm in the Plenary Hall of the Town Hall, where the ‘March 8 Awards’ will be presented.

Coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the birth of the historic activist in the struggle for civil and political rights of women, and favorite daughter of Estepona, Maria Espinosa de los Monteros, she is awarded the ‘March 8 Award’ posthumously. This award recognizes her contribution to the achievement of equality and the improvement of the role of women. This award is also given to the Philosophy teacher of the IES Mar de Alborán, Cristina García Aragón, for her work as head of the Equality Plan and, especially, for her commitment to the visibility of the figure of María Espinosa.

During the event will act the students of IES Mar de Alborán with the work ‘Illustrating the Conference of Maria Espinosa’, with the exhibition of photographs and the intervention of Lucia Anaya Blanco, Paula Balbuena Pineda, Mohamed Bouizizoua Moussaten, Mark Gonzalez Vilchez, Iune Muñoz Manterola and Alisa Shypula. The musical closure of the event will be in charge of Claudia Ballesteros Hernandez, a student of the same school.

The commemorative events will continue on 11, 18 and 25 with two workshops on Couple Breakup for users of CMIM, taught by psychologist Ana Jesus Andrades Ruiz. This is a training aimed at improving the quality of life of women who must deal with the breakup of a relationship. This workshop promotes “the empowerment of each of them, so that allows them to make personal decisions autonomously and independently, under the premises of gender equality, through the development of a series of psychological interventions and specialized group.

On Tuesday March 11 will be given the pictorial conference ‘Sofonisba Anguissola, the elegant dissident’, by the teacher of the Drawing and Painting Workshop of the municipal delegation of Culture, Rocio Garin. The event will begin at 19.30 pm in the Library of Contemporary Cultures, with free admission until full capacity. The speaker will speak on the figure of the Italian painter Sofonisba Anguissola (Cremona, c.?1535-Palermo, November 16, 1625), considered the first successful woman painter of the Renaissance.

The program of commemorative activities will continue on Thursday, March 13, at 11.00 am, at the Residential Center for the Elderly Isdabe, with the talk: ‘ March 8 with our elders. Experiences to share’, by the agent of Equality Leticia Hidalgo Vázquez. Celebrating March 8, “we share a space with the elderly residents to exchange life experiences with which to illustrate the historical inequalities between women and men”.

The commemorative activities will end with a guided tour of the Castle of San Luis and the talk ‘Stories of outstanding women of the Villa’, which will take place on Thursday, March 20 at 10.30 am; and another guided tour to the Mirador del Carmen Cultural Center, which will be held on Thursday, March 27 at 11.00 am. The objective is to show the new and modern public space occupied by the Conservatory of Music, the Library of Contemporary Cultures and the exhibition hall.

Educational Activities

The program of events of the Municipal Women’s Information Center includes the affective-sexual education workshop ‘Building sexualities’ for students in 2nd ESO, which will be held on March 4 at the IES Professor Tomás Hormigo; on March 11 and 17, in the IES Puerta del Mar; and on March 26 and 27, in the IES Mar de Alborán. This workshop will be conducted by the psychologist Cristina Ladrón Pérez. This is a training that affects the improvement of self-esteem and self-knowledge, as well as body and emotional awareness, prevention of risk behaviors in the sexual area or development of egalitarian relationships through appropriate skills and social skills.

Also, the delegation of Women has organized for Friday March 14, at 11.30 am, the coeducational workshop ‘With equality win all’ for students of 1st ESO of the concerted school Juan XXIII, by the psychologist Maria Jose Delgado. The aim is to transfer to the students of the school the training experience that the City Council has been developing in training in equality and prevention of gender violence.
