Estepona exhibits three of the latest works in progress by painter and sculptor Antonio López

‘Fronts and Profiles. César’, a nude started in 2017, leaves the artist’s studio for the first time to be shown to the public at the Mirador del Carmen Cultural Center.

The painting is part of the exhibition ‘Desvelar la realidad’, which brings together the most important figurative authors of the Spanish art scene, and shows a complete journey through the evolution of the artist from La Mancha with his latest views of Madrid’s Gran Vía.

The exhibition hall of the Mirador del Carmen Cultural Center in Estepona offers the opportunity to get a close-up view of some of the latest works in progress by the renowned painter and sculptor from La Mancha, Antonio López, one of the most outstanding artists of Madrid realism. One of them, moreover, leaves the studio for the first time to be exhibited to the public. It is ‘Fronts and Profiles. César’, which he began painting in 2017; unpublished work (pencil, oil and collage of tracing paper on paper), in which the painter addresses the idea of the nude, one of the most recognizable of his professional career along with the perspectives of the Gran Vía in Madrid.

The exhibition ‘Desvelar la realidad’, which can be visited until July 20, offers an interesting journey through more than 60 years of Spanish realism through the works of the most important figurative artists of the artistic panorama of our country. Among them, a set of 12 works by Antonio Lopez stands out, bringing us closer to his artistic evolution, from 1960 to the present day, with two of his latest visions, still in the process of creation, of Madrid’s Gran Via.

The exhibition, organized by the Estepona City Hall and curated by Maria Toral, is set up as a tribute to the great Spanish realists with works ranging from 1956 to 2021. A tour that offers a very precise perspective of the evolution that has taken place in the figurative painting of our country. It thus presents a complete and intertwined set of varied techniques such as drawing, painting or sculpture by the hand of these ten multifaceted creators.

In total, it presents 81 works by renowned names in art, some closely linked to Antonio López, such as his brothers Julio López (1930-2018) and Francisco López (1932-2017), or his wife, María Moreno (1933-2020). Next to them: Esperanza Parada (1928-2011), Amalia Avia (1930-2011), Carmen Laffón (1934-2021), Isabel Quintanilla (1938-2017), Cristóbal Toral (1940) and José Hernández (1944-2013). The pieces come from institutions such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Fundación Ávila, Fundación Sorigué and Fundación Azcona, as well as from private collections or from the artists’ own families.

The exhibition is a unique opportunity to contemplate together, for the first time in Andalusia, creators of unquestionable artistic quality who have influenced the current panorama of Spanish plastic art. Their commitment and determination to follow an artistic path marked by sincerity, rational rigor, a tireless search, pictorial sensitivity and a patient and methodical tactic of image construction, make these creations incomparable.

The diversity and dynamism of this exhibition is completed thanks to the different genres approached: the human figure, still lifes, interiors and landscapes mark the path that the viewer must follow to enter a journey in which all these painters and sculptors have their own personality, enjoy their own style and technique.

The exhibition can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10.00 to 14.00 and from 16.00 to 20.00 hours. Last visit, half an hour before closing time.
