The artist ‘Martirio’ will star in the day of Poetry in Estepona
On May 8, the singer will present together with the composer and guitarist Raúl Rodríguez the show ‘Travesía’ at the Felipe VI Auditorium, an event in which the winning book of the V International Poetry Prize “Ciudad de Estepona” will be announced.
The Estepona Town Hall informs that the artist Maribel Quiñones Gutiérrez ‘Martirio’ will perform in Estepona on May 8. It will be in the event in which the winner of the V International Poetry Prize ‘Ciudad de Estepona’ will be announced. The artist will present together with the composer and guitarist Raúl Rodríguez the show ‘Travesía’.
The event will also be attended by Luis Alberto de Cuenca, who this year is the president of the jury. De Cuenca has received numerous awards throughout his career, both for his literary and journalistic work. The writer has just published the poetry anthology ‘Los dedos de la aurora. Poems of the classical world’, where he recreates the ancient world from a contemporary point of view.
The V International Poetry Prize ‘Ciudad de Estepona’, which is endowed with 7,000 euros and includes the publication of the winning work by the prestigious publishing house Pre-Textos, has become one of the most important literary calls in our country. In its last edition in 2024 it received more than 2,000 participating works.
The director of the contest, the writer and poet Alejandro Simón Partal, has highlighted the commitment that the City Council is making to promote culture and has stressed that this poetry prize has been consolidated in a few years as one of the most desired by authors who write in Spanish anywhere in the world. In this sense, he highlighted the number of works presented in previous editions from other countries.
The deadline for the presentation of original works will be open until March 17 at 15.00 hours. They should be sent in PDF format to the following e-mail address: premiointernacionalpoesia@estepona.es. The rules can be consulted on the municipal website www.estepona.es. The jury’s decision will be made public on May 8.
Martirio
Maribel Quiñones Gutiérrez ‘Martirio’ was part of the group Jarcha in the 80s and, later, of Veneno. Together with Pata Negra and Kiko Veneno, she published her first album Estoy mala and from there began the career of an artist in constant evolution, a pioneer in the recovery and updating of Spanish popular music gems. With 18 albums published, in addition to her work as an actress and her literary facet, Martirio has renewed the Spanish copla
freeing it from the ties of the past. In 2019 she was awarded the Medal of Merit for Fine Arts by the Ministry of Culture.
Luis Alberto de Cuenca
Luis Alberto de Cuenca is a poet, philologist and translator. National Poetry Prize and member of the Royal Academy of History, he has been director of the Institute of Philology of the Higher Center for Scientific Research (CSIC) and the National Library of Spain, and has held the post of Secretary of State for Culture. He has received numerous awards, both for his literary and journalistic work.
