The City Council of Estepona has announced the V International Poetry Prize ‘City of Estepona’, which is endowed with 7,000 euros. This is one of the most important literary competitions in the country, which in its last edition last year received more than 2,000 participating works.
The director of the contest, the writer and poet Alejandro Simon Partal, today presented this fifth call which, as in previous years, includes the publication of the winning work by Pre-Textos, one of the most prestigious publishers and presence in Spain and Latin America.
Simón Partal has highlighted the commitment that the City Council is making to promote culture and stressed that this poetry prize has been consolidated in a few years as one of the most desired by authors who write in Spanish anywhere in the world, as evidenced by the number of works submitted from other countries. In his opinion, “this international repercussion is motivated by the soul that we have put into this award and everything that revolves around it, as various activities are organized to promote reading and strengthen ties with culture in our city to coincide with the award ceremony”.
The deadline for the submission of original works will begin on January 30 and will be open until March 17 at 15.00 hours. They will be sent in PDF format to the following e-mail address: premiointernacionalpoesia@estepona.es. The rules can be consulted on the municipal website www.estepona.es. The jury’s decision will be made public on May 8.
In this edition the president of the jury will be Luis Alberto de Cuenca, poet, philologist and translator. National Poetry Prize and member of the Royal Academy of History, he has been director of the Institute of Philology of the Higher Center for Scientific Research (CSIC) and the National Library of Spain, and has held the post of Secretary of State for Culture. He has received numerous awards, both for his literary and journalistic work. He has just published the poetry anthology ‘Los dedos de la aurora.
Poemas del mundo clásico’, where he recreates the ancient world from a contemporary point of view.
Alejandro Simón Partal has underlined that Pre-Textos has achieved one of the best poetry, narrative and essay catalogs in Spanish language during its more than four decades of trajectory, so the publication of the winning poetry book will be especially interesting for its author.
This literary contest was born in 2021 as one of the most relevant that have been created in recent years in the national scene, both for the economic endowment of the award and for its link to one of the most important publishers in the Spanish language. In its fourth edition, it reached a record number of participants with a total of 2,041 works submitted, half a thousand more than the previous year. Of these, around 60% were national authors; 30% were from Latin America; and 10% from other countries around the world.
