CUDECA
The CUDECA Foundation is a non-profit organization that works according to its idea of dignity at the end of life, offering professional medical care to people with cancer and other advanced diseases, as well as support to their families. It has a great experience and competence in the field of palliative care, from which it offers its special way of caring, not only treating the physical illness, but also the psychological, social and spiritual aspects. Completely free of charge, it offers home care, day and rehabilitation center, hospitalization unit, psychosocial program, counseling and outpatient consultation.
Its activity began in 1992 thanks to the work and dedication of Joan Hunt, born in England and resident of the Costa del Sol. After the death of her husband from cancer, Hunt decided to dedicate her life to helping others in the same situation and founded CUDECA, which since its creation has assisted more than 19,000 patients through its multidisciplinary programs. In 2024 the foundation cared for more than 1,900 people and offered support to almost 2,400 family members.
AVOI
Since 1993, the AVOI Children’s Oncology Volunteers Association has been dedicated to helping children admitted to the Maternal and Infant Hospital of Malaga, making their stay as pleasant as possible. To this end, and with the collaboration of more than 170 volunteers, it carries out activities 365 days a year to entertain the children, such as games, craft workshops, themed cultural weeks, celebrations of special days, parties, cinema, contests and entertainment. In addition, magic shows are organized every Tuesday.
Another pioneering initiative promoted by AVOI is canine therapy, launched in 2024 with the help of the dogs Garbanzo and Rufino, who are petted, hugged, combed and fed to the children in the onco-hematology ward and the PICU.
AVOI’s work is also carried out outside the hospital environment by supporting cancer research, promoting bone marrow and blood donation, holding onco-football tournaments and organizing trips to Disneyland Paris or the Camino de Santiago.
