The City Council has completed the renovation of the lighting in six parks and will save 27,000 euros annually thanks to LED technology

The project has made it possible to replace a total of 350 streetlights, reduce installed power by about 65%, and save more than 95,000 kilowatt-hours per year—the equivalent of the electricity consumption of 27 homes

The Estepona City Council reports that it has completed the comprehensive renovation of the street lighting in six of the city’s parks, a project that will improve the energy efficiency of these facilities and generate an estimated annual savings of 27,000 euros for the municipal budget.

The project involved replacing 350 high-pressure sodium vapor lights with new, state-of-the-art LED fixtures in La Constitución Park, Huerta Nueva Park, Human Rights Park, Children’s Park, Seghers Park, and Carmen Thyssen Park. In Carmen Thyssen Park, more than a hundred decorative lighting fixtures have also been installed to enhance the park’s appearance and improve the visitor experience after dark.

The project, which involved an investment of 186,823 euros, has modernized facilities that, in some cases, were more than three decades old. Thanks to this renovation, the installed power has been reduced from 35 kilowatts to 12.25 kilowatts, representing a decrease of 22.75 kilowatts and an approximate 65 percent reduction in energy consumption for lighting these public spaces.

The Deputy Mayor for Services and External Oversight, Blas Ruzafa, emphasized that this initiative “marks a new step forward in the municipal strategy to modernize public infrastructure, improve the quality of services, and make more efficient use of public resources.”

He also noted that “we have renovated facilities that had become obsolete after many years of service and that now provide more efficient, safer, and sustainable lighting, while significantly reducing energy consumption and maintenance costs.”

The municipal official also emphasized that “the implementation of LED technology will yield savings of nearly 27,000 euros per year, meaning this investment will provide a direct financial return for the City Council and will continue to generate both economic and environmental benefits throughout its useful life.”

The upgrade will result in energy savings of 95,550 kilowatt-hours per year—equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of about 27 homes—and will also reduce maintenance costs thanks to the greater durability of LED technology and the incorporation of dimming systems that adapt the lighting to the needs of each park.

Furthermore, the new fixtures, with a warm color temperature of 3,000 kelvin, improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact by minimizing light pollution and glare, thereby promoting both residents’ rest and the protection of the surrounding environment.

The useful life of the new installation is estimated at ten years, during which time cumulative savings will reach 270,000 euros, allowing the investment to be recouped and resulting in a favorable financial outcome for the municipal budget.
