The City Council is wrapping up the excavation phase of the velodrome construction project, which includes an 11-a-side soccer field and the city’s first rugby facilities

Work on the stormwater and sewer systems is also nearing completion

The Estepona City Council reports that excavation work is nearing completion on the site of the future velodrome, which will be located next to the Monterroso Creek and Camino de las Mesas, and will include facilities for cycling, 11-a-side soccer, and the city’s first rugby facilities.

The excavation of the site is part of the first phase of this construction project. In addition, work is also nearing completion on the stormwater and sewer systems required for this sports facility.

The project, which began last June, also includes the creation of a peri-urban park covering more than 20,000 square meters, which will feature a banked track for cyclists (velodrome), as well as a state-of-the-art artificial turf field designed to host both rugby and 11-a-side soccer matches.

This oval-shaped velodrome will feature tiered seating on several levels with an initial capacity of 1,000 spectators. The complex will also include restrooms, locker rooms, a gym, offices, and storage areas, thus completing the main service building.

The facility is located on a sports complex lot in the northwest part of the municipality, next to the Monterroso Creek and the Camino de las Mesas. The first phase of construction will involve connecting the site to the necessary basic utilities: water, sewer, and electricity.

The dimensions of the playing field have been defined according to the criteria established in the Regulations on Sports Facilities and Spaces (NIDE), drafted by the Higher Council for Sports, which sets forth the technical requirements necessary for playing both soccer and rugby. Similarly, the design of the cycling track complies with the specifications set forth in the UCI Cycling Regulations.

The project was awarded to the Parque Estepona joint venture for a total of 3,652,569.85 euros (VAT included). The winning bidder submitted an improvement proposal that shortens the initial construction timeline, so the total duration of the work will be 9 months.

Affordable Housing and Connection to the Fairgrounds

In this same area, the City Council is working on a new project aimed at integrating the Monterroso River into the city, creating an urban space for residents that will be connected to the Fairgrounds and Sports Park, as well as to the town’s urban center.

In addition, the development of this entire area will be accompanied by the construction of affordable housing. To this end, the City Council is working on the administrative procedures to carry out a zoning amendment that will allow for the acquisition of land to be used for the construction of approximately 300 affordable housing units in the Monterroso area.
