The City Council presents a new edition of the music therapy program for seniors ‘The sound beautifies you’.

It is carried out from March to December in the residences for the elderly and day centers of the municipality. The professional singer, Ana Fargas, is in charge of the sessions in which popular songs, flamenco, sevillanas, copla or boleros are performed.

The councilman attached to the delegation of Elderly, Daniel Garcia; the director of the area of Social Services, Elderly and Social Integration, Lorenzo Guerra; and professional singer and project monitor, Ana Fargas, today presented a new edition of the pioneering music therapy program in the city, called ‘Mayor: The sound beautifies you’.

This municipal initiative is aimed at users of the residences of the elderly of the municipality and the Alzheimer’s Day Center, and aims to help these people can work memory, remembering and interpreting songs that were significant in the past. In addition, they also get to work their emotions, socialization is encouraged and good moments of coexistence are encouraged, said the municipal responsible.

The mayor has expressed his satisfaction with the great success that has been achieved through this program, as it is having a significant impact among participants, among which has been observed remarkable improvements in the physical, cognitive, emotional and social areas, consolidating the benefits of live singing as a therapeutic tool.

In this way, as Lorenzo Guerra explained, once the sessions were over, the participants expressed a high degree of satisfaction, highlighting the motivation they experienced during the sessions. Family members and caregivers also noted improvements in the mood and attitude of the elderly, as well as in their willingness to participate in other activities.

Also, the director of the area of Social Services, Elderly and Social Integration has reported that for this innovative project that has been developing the City Council since 2023, has had the singer and technician in ‘Care for people in a situation of dependence’ Ana Fargas, who has selected a repertoire of popular songs of musical styles that are of particular interest to this sector of the population, such as flamenco, sevillanas, copla, pasodobles or boleros.

He also reported that the activity is based on the positive influence that music therapy has on active and healthy aging. “It is about working the physical, cognitive (especially attention and memory), but also the emotions, so we play songs that can remind them of moments in their lives. In this way,

we get them to socialize, empathize and relate better among themselves, improving their mood.”

Finally, Councilman Daniel Garcia, said that for the Consistory is a priority to improve the quality of life and well-being of our elders, promoting innovative activities, such as this, to promote their autonomy and emotional well-being through the therapeutic power of music.
