Madrid-based artist Ana Kai is exhibiting her paintings from the series “Materia y Memoria” at the Casa de las Tejerinas

The exhibition will be on display from July 2 to 22

The Estepona City Council announces that Room 1 of the Casa de Las Tejerinas, located in the Plaza de las Flores, will host the painting exhibition “Materia y Memoria” by Madrid-based artist Ana Kai, beginning July 2.

“Materia y Memoria” presents a collection of works in which Ana Kai explores the surface as a site of inscription, sedimentation, and transformation. Through collages, superimposed layers, glazes, textiles, pigments, and textured materials, she creates compositions suspended between organic abstraction and emotional cartography, suggesting interior landscapes in which the fragile and the tectonic, the luminous and the eroded, coexist in a silent tension.

Each piece emerges as a sensitive territory where the material preserves traces, tensions, and fragments of memory, giving shape to a visual language rooted in accumulation, deconstruction, and permanence.

The exhibition will be open until July 22, Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with free admission.

Ana Kai, 1974. Ana Kai’s work occupies a space between organic abstraction, emotional cartography, and material relief. Her current practice revolves around matter as a site of inscription: a living surface where layers, traces, erosions, voids, and fragments of memory accumulate.

Through a technique combining collage and textural painting, Kai constructs compositions in which the canvas ceases to be a passive support and becomes a field of sedimentation. Pigments, inks, papers, textiles, mesh, and other materials overlap, conceal one another, tear, cover, and reappear in a process of constant construction and deconstruction. Each work thus emerges as a sensitive topography, a territory in transformation where the material records the passage of time and the tension between what remains and what fades away.

Rather than representing the landscape, Ana Kai shifts it to an inner plane. Her pieces evoke emotional geographies, non-literal maps in which the surface functions as physical memory: stratum, scar, erosion, remnant. Transparencies, glazes, and material densities create a shifting, unstable perception in which the organic and the tectonic coexist in balance.

Her process combines intuition and structure. Each work develops by listening to the material, allowing the layers to reveal their own rhythms, irregularities, and resonances. Her training in Design and Interior Architecture provides a deep understanding of space, composition, and materiality, evident in the way she navigates the tension between fluidity and restraint, gesture and architecture, expansion and balance.

Following extended residencies in the United Kingdom and Germany, her practice has been enriched by a fusion of cultural influences that have shaped her approach to contemporary abstraction. Her career includes exhibitions at venues such as El Palace Barcelona, the Vienna Art Fair, El Círculo de Bellas Artes, and the Pons Foundation, in collaboration with Arte Global. With works featured in international collections, Ana Kai has developed a solid body of work centered on the sensory and “material” interpretation of the abstract landscape.
