Martirio, Miguel Poveda and Laura García Lorca, among other creators, will participate in the Poetry Day in Estepona.

La Bien Querida’, the poets Carlos Marzal, Ana Merino, Carlos Pardo and Sofía Castañón, the journalist Marta Fernández and the Nadal prize-winning novelist Ana Merino will also be present at the activities planned for the V International Poetry Prize ‘Ciudad de Estepona’.
The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, and the head of the Poetry Day in the city, Alejandro Simón Partal, today presented the events planned in this activity to be held next Thursday, May 8, on the occasion of the V International Poetry Prize ‘Ciudad de Estepona’.
The alderman has indicated that poetry has become one of the artistic disciplines that receives more attention from the City Council, to the point that for the past five years organizes the International Poetry Prize City of Estepona. This literary contest has become one of the most important in Castilian language dedicated to the lyric, proof of this is that it is among the top five with the highest participation in Spain.
In that sense, he recalled that this year has obtained a new record of overcoming with more than 2,300 manuscripts submitted, many of them from countries such as Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Colombia, England, Germany, Jordan and China. The winning work will receive a prize of 7,000 euros and will be published by the publishing house Pre-Textos.
To celebrate the jury’s decision on May 8, the Consistory has programmed a series of free activities with great names in literature, music and artistic creation.
The events will begin at 13.00 hours with a poetry reading at the Mirador del Carmen Cultural Center with the participation of the singer and composer ‘La bien querida’ and the authors Ana Merino, Carlos Marzal and Sofía Castañón. In this activity will be present students from different schools in the city with the idea of bringing the lyrics to the youngest.
Later, at 20.00 hours, will proceed in the Felipe VI Auditorium to the reading of the jury’s decision of the V International Poetry Prize ‘City of Estepona’. At the same event there will be an interesting dialogue between the singer Miguel Poveda and Laura García Lorca, niece of the most universal poet of Spanish literature. This meeting will be moderated by the writer Carlos Pardo and the journalist and writer Marta Fernández.
Miguel Poveda, one of the most important voices of Spanish song and flamenco today, has just released the album ‘Enlorquecido’, in which he pays tribute to the poet Federico García Lorca. Poveda was recognized in 2007 with the National Music Award, in 2012 with the Medal of Andalusia and in 2022 as Adopted Son of Estepona.
Laura García Lorca, president of the García Lorca Foundation and cultural manager of reference, is recognized for her intense activity to make known in depth the work of her uncle. Preserving artistically the legacy of the poet from Fuente Vaqueros, as well as contributing to the dissemination of the most interesting aspects of his work, have been her two main objectives for decades.
The closing of the event will be in charge of the artist Martirio, who will present together with the musician and composer Raúl Rodríguez his show ‘Travesía’. The Huelva-born singer will review the songs that have been part of her artistic life, from flamenco to blues, from bolero to tango, from copla to jazz, with special attention to the repertoire of Chavela Vargas.
Martirio was distinguished in 2004 with the Medal of Andalusia, in 2016 with the National Award of Current Music and in 2019 with the Medal of Merit in Fine Arts by the Ministry of Culture.
Invitations for this event at the Felipe VI Auditorium can be collected, starting tomorrow April 22, at the Mirador del Carmen Cultural Center and the Padre Manuel Cultural Center.
