Success of the first edition of the Costa del Sol Gran Fondo, with start in Estepona and end of the timed section at Peñas Blancas

The event, held on Saturday, consolidates the Costa del Sol as a benchmark for cycling tourism and shows the region's commitment to sport and sustainability.

The City Council of Estepona reports that the Costa del Sol Gran Fondo held last Saturday, with great success, its first edition, bringing together hundreds of cyclists who from early in the morning toured some of the most spectacular scenery of southern Spain.

The day began at 8:00 am with the neutralized start from the center of Estepona, accompanied by the mayor, José María García Urbano, who welcomed the participants and highlighted the value of the event for the promotion of sports and tourism in the municipality.

The peloton enjoyed an urban section through the streets of the city before tackling the demanding route through the Costa del Sol, Sierra Bermeja and the Genal Valley, with a timed finish at the mythical Alto de Peñas Blancas. The route was a real showcase of the territory: mountain roads, white villages and landscapes that combine the harshness of the slope with the beauty of the surroundings.

The involvement of the municipalities and the support of the neighbors has been key to the development of this first edition, consolidating the spirit of community and hospitality that characterizes the Costa del Sol. It is worth mentioning the excellent coordination work that has allowed the smooth running of the event, with the involvement of the municipalities of Casares, Gaucín, Cortes de la Frontera, Jimera de Líbar, Benadalid, Algatocín, Genalguacil and, of course, Estepona.

Likewise, the collaboration of the Civil Guard Traffic, Civil Protection, Local Police and numerous volunteers, whose joint work has ensured the safety and fluidity of the event along the entire route, has been essential.

In terms of sports, the fastest in the timed section to Peñas Blancas were Pedro García Fernández, Luis Ángel Maté and Fernando Romera. In the women's category, María García de la Cruz, Rebeca Bernal and Rocío García de Veas stood out.
