The mayor lays the cornerstone for the future velodrome, which will include an 11-a-side soccer field and the city’s first rugby facilities

The initiative calls for the creation of a peri-urban park covering more than 20,000
square meters

The development of this sector will make land available for more than 300 affordable housing units.
Estepona, July 15, 2026.- The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano,
presided today over the groundbreaking ceremony for the future velodrome, which
will be located next to the Monterroso Creek and Camino de las Mesas, and will include facilities
for cycling, 11-a-side soccer, and the city’s first facilities for rugby.
The project also includes the creation of a peri-urban park covering an area of more than
20,000 square meters, which will feature a banked track for cyclists
(velodrome), as well as a state-of-the-art artificial turf field designed to
host both rugby and 11-a-side soccer matches.
This oval-shaped cycling stadium will feature stands distributed across several levels with
an initial capacity of 1,000 spectators. The complex will also include restrooms,
locker rooms, a gym, offices, and storage areas, thus completing the
main building designated for services.
The infrastructure, construction of which began in early June, is located on a plot
of land designated for sports facilities in the northwest of the municipality, next to the Monterroso Creek
and the Camino de las Mesas. The first phase of construction will involve providing the site with
the necessary basic utilities: water, sewer, and electricity.
The dimensions of the playing field have been defined in accordance with the criteria established in the
Regulations on Sports Facilities and Spaces (NIDE), drawn up by the Higher
Council for Sports, which sets forth the technical conditions necessary for the practice of both soccer
and rugby. Similarly, the design of the cycling track complies with the
specifications set forth in the UCI Cycling Regulations.
The contract was awarded to the Parque Estepona Joint Venture for a total of 3,652,569.85 euros (VAT
included). The winning bidder submitted an improvement proposal that shortens the
initial completion deadline, so the total duration of the work will be 9 months.
The councilman, who was accompanied at the event by local clubs, groups, and athletes
involved in cycling, emphasized that this facility had been a long-standing demand
for decades by both professionals and amateurs, and noted that its construction

operation will contribute to all the municipal work being done to improve the quality of
life for citizens.
Affordable housing and connection to the Fairgrounds
In this same area, the City Council is working on a new project aimed at
integrating the Monterroso River into the city, creating an urban area for residents that
will be connected to the Fairgrounds and Sports Park, as well as to the town center

In addition, the development of this entire area will be accompanied by the construction of
publicly subsidized housing. In this regard, the City Council is working on the
administrative procedures to carry out a zoning amendment that will allow for the acquisition of
land to be used for the construction of approximately 300 publicly subsidized housing units (VPO) in the Monterroso area
