The great lyrical tragedy of the composer Giuseppe Verdi and libretto in Italian by Temistocle Solera, marked the beginning of his consecration as a composer, and is based on the Old Testament and the play Nabuchodonosor, by Francis Cornue and Anicète Bourgeois. It was premiered on March 9, 1842 at La Scala in Milan. Despite not being one of Verdi’s most performed operas, Nabucco was Verdi’s first great success, catapulting him to fame. This opera offers moments of intense lyricism and choral grandeur, with the emblematic chorus ‘Va, pensiero’, considered a hymn of resistance that has moved and continues to move entire generations.
Divided into four acts, the scene takes place between Jerusalem and Babylon in 586 B.C. Its plot revolves around the oppression of the Jewish people by the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar, exploring themes of power, faith, redemption and freedom.
The National Opera of Moldova is located in Chisinau, its capital. After the collapse of the USSR it became one of the few companies to have its own orchestra, choirs, soloists and ballet. Its operatic repertoire includes Madame Butterfly, Aida, Norma, Turandot and Nabucco, as in this case.
